Over the years, maybe F8X owners have been squeezing more and more power out of their S55 engines. One of the limitations has been the Charge-Air-Cooler. Most were designed to compliment the factory twin turbo setup and weren't designed for 1000+ HP Single Turbo Builds.
The CSF #8082 is still the most popular Charge-Air-Cooler on the market for the S55. So when DocRace was looking for a cooler that would keep up with their massive single turbo kits, they turned to CSF for a solution. The new Charge-Air-Cooler is the ultimate performance upgrade for any single turbo F80 M3, F82 M4, or F87 M2 Competition.
The CSF x DocRace Charge-Air-Cooler was engineered to optimize flow and handle the massive airflow from the DocRace single turbo kits. These kits feature turbos as large as an 8280 (1225-1445HP), so having a charge cooler than can manage the heat and pressure from that large a turbo is crucial.
Key Design Features:
- New higher fin density air-to-water core.
- Large Single Inlet with air divider oriented for a shorter and more direct hot side charge pipe.
- Improved cooling performance supports additional heat generated by large single turbo applications.
- TIG-Welded 100% All Aluminum construction offers incredible durability and longevity vs the factory plastic tank design.
- Drop-in fit installation using the factory mounting points and cold side charge pipes.

Design & Engineering
CSF build off the success of the original #8082 design which has been a best seller for almost a decade. The engineering team redesigned the inlet side of the cooler to allow for a single and more direct charge pipe design. This removes a potential weak point of the y-pipe style charge pipes that are normally used for single turbo setups.

CSF #8082
The core is 60% larger than the factory system with the same dimensions as the #8082 core. However, the new Charge-Air-Cooler features CSF's new high density fin Air-to-Water core technology. The new 4.8mm fin size increases offers 30% more cooling fin rows than the #8082's 6.5mm fins.

The TIG-Welded 100% All Aluminum construction offers the strength to keep up with incredibly high boost pressure. This improves durability and longevity so you can be confident it will hold up to over 1200whp.

Single Inlet vs Dual
The factory twin turbo setup utilizes two individual charge pipes from each turbo. With the turbos nested directly on the side of the engine, this was the shortest and smoothest path to chair the charge air to the top mounted cooler. As tuners and owners have continued to push the S55 platform, many have converted to large single turbo setups. Single turbos need to be mounted further forward and higher up in the engine bay due to space constraints which drastically changes the routing of the charge pipes.
Twin Turbo Charge Pipe Routing
Single Turbo Charge Y-Pipe Routing
Routing the charge air to match the factory charge-air-cooler configuration introduces some extreme bends and angles to the airflow. The need for a y-pipe (split path) also introduces a potential weak point in the system due to the need for extra weld joints.
Single Turbo Charge Y-Pipe Routing
CSF x DocRace Single Turbo Charge Pipe Routing
CSF and DocRace resolved these issues by redesigning the inlet tank to have a large 3 in. (76mm) single inlet oriented towards the front of the engine. Shortening and straightening out of the charge air path offers less restriction and faster throttle response.
Air Outlet Divider
The inclusion of an air divider welded into the outlet tank of the cooler is another important feature. With such a large/wide core, the engineering team wanted to make sure that the air entering the throttle body was as smooth as possible. After extensive simulations in SolidWorks CFD software, an air divider was added to the design to ensure the best possible flow through the throttle body and into the intake manifold. This is a carryover feature from the CSF #8082.
DocRace Exclusive
This Charge-Air-Cooler is available exclusively through DocRace. It can be purchased as part of one of their full turbo kits or individually for those looking to build their own single turbo setup. The standard finish is a Crinkle Black Powdercoat just like the CSF #8082, but it is also available in raw aluminum, or a custom color/finish.
