PERRIN Toyota GR86 & Subaru BRZ (ZN8) Engine Oil Cooler Kit

In racing or harsh driving conditions, engine oil temperatures can skyrocket. This can decrease power output and reduce the oil's ability to properly lubricate the engine. A well-designed engine oil cooling system like the PERRIN Oil Cooler Kit will help keep temperatures within the desired temperature range. This both maintains performance and prolongs the life of the engine. PERRIN setups have been proven to reduce engine oil temperatures by approximately 30-35°F (15-20°C) at 7000 RPM.

PERRIN Oil Cooler Kit utilizes a bar & plate oil cooler design by CSF. This is a single-pass version of the popular CSF #8119 Universal Oil Cooler. The durability of the bar/plate core is ideal for the kit's mounting location directly behind the front grill where debris can easily strike the core.

Design & Engineering

The GR86 and BRZ do not come from the factory with an external engine oil cooler, relying on a small liquid to liquid style cooler. This style of oil cooler utilizes coolant from the radiator to cool the engine oil. While generally acceptable for most street cars, it reaches its limits pretty quickly on track and even aggressive street driving. An external oil cooler kit is a simple bolt on solution that will keep your engine temperatures in check and keep the engine running at its best.

PERRIN has been designing and manufacturing performance products for over 30 years specializing in Subaru and other JDM platforms. When designing cooling systems, PERRIN partners with cooling exports at CSF to produce the heat exchanger portion of their systems. This oil cooler kit is no expectation utilizing a custom CSF Bar & Plate oil cooler exclusive to PERRIN.

Oil Cooler

This oil cooler kit utilizes a high-efficiency PERRIN by CSF Bar & Plate style oil cooler core. The "Aero-Flow" core design maximizes heat dissipation without restricting oil flow to ensure your engine is fed with full oil pressure. This bar & plate design is much stronger and able to withstand damage from normal road debris better than traditional tube and fin type cores. The mounting holes and hose connection points are also more durable.

The 100% TIG welded construction with cast end tanks further increases the overall strength of the coolers. Every cooler is pressure tested to 120 PSI before leaving the factory so you can be confident you will never have one burst on you like some weaker designs used in other kits. The end tanks also feature specially designed 40-degree angles for optimal flow and lower pressure drop.

Adapter Plate & Thermostat

The PERRIN Filter Adapter features an integrated 185°F (85°C) thermostat. This means your oil will reach the optimum operating temperature within the engine before it cycles through the oil cooler. This ensures proper lubricity within your engine at all times and prevents overcooling. Preinstalled -10AN fittings ensure a secure leak free connection.

Another benefit of the PERRIN system is it divorces the engine oil and coolant systems by replacing the factory unit with the sandwich plate. The factory oil cooler/warmer uses the coolant system to help regulate oil temperatures. In high performance applications, this can add heat and stress to the coolant system while also not providing enough cooling capacity for the engine oil. Divorcing the systems means no added heat to the coolant from the engine oil improving the efficiency of the cooling system as a whole.

Mounting Brackets

This PERRIN Oil Cooler comes with custom brackets that allow the oil cooler core to mount directly to existing holes in the OEM core support of your vehicle. These CNC machined 6061 T6 aluminum brackets are made in house at PERRIN. The brackets were designed to look sleek and stylish while blending seamlessly behind your bumper for the cleanest install possible.

High-Pressure Lines

THe kit includes a pair of lightweight Aeroquip brand -10 hoses that are rated for 250psi and 300°F continuous temperature. Each hose comes pre-assembled and wrapped with PERRIN's Industrial grade Pyrojacket that can withstand continuous exposure to 500° F (260°C) and up to 2000°F (1090°C) for 15-20 minutes.

The motorsport grade fittings offer smooth radius bends for minimal pressure drop and optimal flow. The fittings to the thermostatic sandwich plate are -10AN, and the fittings to the oil cooler are M22x1.5.

Test Results

PEERIN conducted several R&D tests to ensure they were offering the best performance for the GR86 and BRZ. The first test was to observe pressure drop. The system sees a minimal 3.0 to 3.5 PSI drop between the feed and return line. Subaru boxer engines are notoriously sensitive to pressure drop, so keeping that to a minimum was crucial when designing this kit. Thermal testing showed an average temperature drop of 34.2°F (18.5°C) across the RPM range. During testing, oil temperatures did not exceed 185°F (85°C).
